The Group has equipment for preparation, characterization and integration of materials.

The preparation equipment includes: Magnetron Sputtering and Pulsed laser deposition of thin films, induction furnace for metals and alloys melting and mechanical alloying by ball milling. 

Photolithography is also available for thin films shaping and device construction.

The characterization equipment consists in Scanning Electron Microscope with microanalysis (EDX), Atomic/Magnetic Force Microscopy (AFM/MFM), magnetometers (SQUID and VSM), Inductive hysteresis loop tracer, Magneto-optical Kerr effect Microscope and loop tracer, magneto-elastic resonance spectrometer, impedance and network analyzers, etc.

We have also access to Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation techniques in large european facilities

Integration of magnetic materials in sensors and actuators is carried out by means of home made circuits and cells, temperature chamber and testing equipment.


Giant Magneto-Impedance (GMI) measurements and high-frequency characterization

Most of the impedance measurements make use of an Agilent Network Analyzer, model E5071C, in a frequency range from 9 kHz to 8.5 GHz.

The magnetic field is applied by means of Helmholtz coils:
- One axis system up to 300 Oe allowing a resolution of 0.05 Oe.
- Triaxis system up to 200 Oe with a resolution of  5 × 10-6 Oe in each axis.
